What do you think guys, overkill?
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sph-127-…
It's the above fancy ones for 85 or the standard Wearevers for 65

I can't think of a car that needs drilled and slotted rotors more judging by the fact that the typical driver of these cars drives with both feet down.

I'd just buy the standard rotors. unless you match this rotor with a performance oriented pad you're going to get premature wear and even if you match it with a good pad, brake dust out the wazoo.

Unless you're doing some really aggressive driving for extended periods of time, the standard ones on that car are plenty-good.

My 2.5l powered fusion. bone stock. in sport mode lol Probably still faster than the monte or montego around an auto X circuit. I mean what are brakes lol the monte's brakes feel like the pads are made of salt water taffy.

I don't think it is overkill. I like to drive hard so as soon as stock parts go out i get performance parts, why not? You are replacing parts anyways right? Plus braking I think is one of the most over looked performance and visual mod's you can make to a car. SO.. I say go for it, I recommend the red stuff pads, there is quite a bit of dust but its red. it looks interesting when it builds up a bit. love milans! pics of your progress?? :D

More fun than in a miata. You *expect* miatas to be driven hard and turned in aggressively. So you're not really prepared for the savagery of a Milan driver diving into a turn as the non-offensive sedan body rolls and the summer tires do their damnedest to keep the car holding through the turn followed by the steep nose dive as the binders glow red and the portly midsize sedan does its best impression of an M3 in the braking zone.

the Montego says "what are pads?". It also says "Don't you know I have a Cyclone Grand Touring package? I have power steering! I eat courses alive!"
And my Milan is bone stock as well with one of it's two tail pipes bent down some (from when i got rear ended a while ago the body shop was under the impression that just bending it back in place would be fine and it wouldn't bend back ever.)
But yea other than my rear window limo-tints it's bone stock.

Haha, there really isn't progress it's my DD standard family sedan. Other then tinting the back half of the car to black limo tint, nothing's been done to it.
My fun car is a 1968 Mercury Montego MX:

Yeah the F41 suspension package on the Monte SS laughs at your feeble cones and squeals like a pig, but sticks. .81 G on the motor trend skidpad in 1986 isn't too shabby.

I mean, you asked. I've just been down this road before, and now realize brakes only need to be strong enough to lock up the wheels, and if you mash your foot down on that brake pedal, you're going to feel that ABS kick in at almost any speed.
The above rotors will just eat pads and probably do a fair bit of squeaking for no reason.

Get some Hawk ceramic brake pads to go along with them. Maybe upgrade the brake lines/fluid as well...

That's pretty damn impressive in 86 for the Monte.
Excerpt from Edmunds review of the 07 Milan:
With responsive steering and a quiet ride, the Mercury Milan is one of the sportier and more luxurious vehicles in the midsize sedan segment. It demonstrates a willingness to corner and change directions at speed with enthusiasm.
Sounds like maybe it'll do decent.
I like how the reviews say the engines are a disappointment for power.
The 0-60 time isn't even a half second off the newest turbo malibu. I only know/use that as a comparison because my co-worker drives one and she goes on about how fast it is. I told her I'd beat her 0-60, she said no way because TURBO. Then she claimed I was being sexist for thinking I could make up .4 of a second in reaction time/skill. Her attitude changed when I told her I'd be equally confident against a guy and it had nothing to do with her.

Honestly though unless you autox/track the vehicle I wouldn't do it. These things won't last as long as a normal rotor too. I did the drilled/slotted rotors on a DD before, they warp faster then normal. They stop on a dime yeah, but they can also go bad quicker, not to mention the rotor itself could crack as well

Throw it in the tire fund, I've always found good tires can make a huge difference for similarly paltry sums.

yeah I'm mainly having fun, it's a pretty irresponsible decision for the DD
I'll apply the extra 50 to the Montego somewhere

Yeah it's true.
and the tires are getting done by next month. I want new tires before snow falls. And honestly waiting until next month is pushing it. Never know when it might fall at this point.
I'll apply the 50$ saved to the tires, or towards the Montego.
I think I'm going with the General Altimax RT43's that everyone recommended.

I would stick with blanks on a daily non-performance car. Just slotted/drilled fronts looks goofy IMO.
Get the standard ones, use code P20 at checkout for 20% off. Dump the savings into the Montego.

Take the standard rotor, or go get the cheapest Centric rotors off Rockauto.
With drilled or slotted rotors, they cannot be turned on a lathe. Once they wear down, it's replacement.
Also drilled is more likely to crack, but that's normally only under extremely severe duty (track use).

Best part about dimpled or slotted rotors is the sprinkler sound effects you get when braking.

Your choice of brake fluid, pads, and lines will make a bigger difference in preventing brake fade. These won't increase your stopping power, they'll just reduce heat buildup. Realistically, this is the last thing you'll need on standard brakes. Chances are that your calipers will fail before your rotors get so hot that they stop working.

Drilled rotors can actually reduce braking performance on street vehicles, since they reduce the surface area that the pad has to act on. According to the SAE paper on cross-drilling, your brakes have to get over 170 degrees C (~340 degrees F) before the brakes get hot enough to overcome this. They will also result in uneven brake pad wear, as the holes will wear little slots into your brake pads.
Slots are literally designed to shave your brake pads. The slots + drilled combo is designed such that the slots will shave enough material off your pads to prevent the uneven pad wear caused by the holes.
The SAE paper I referenced earlier (SAE 2006-01-0691) estimates that drilled rotors will cause a 25-30% reduction in pad life in typical street driving conditions, and up to 50% reduction in track use.
The offset is for the "typical sedan" they tested, the cross-drilled front rotors cooled ~12% better at 100kph, stopped better at temperatures over 170 C, and had reduced fade at pad temperatures over 285 C.
Personally, I feel that for my car, the benefits of cross-drilled and slotted rotors do not outweigh their increased cost and pad wear. I much prefer cryogenically treated blank rotors.
